What is worrying for the company is that this may not be a lone case

I wonder if this same trick can be used to swap orders?

A buyer orders iPhone
Packager orders something that weighs same as iPhone.

He dispatches both the orders but with addresses swapped

that would have risks associated with it. because the person who paid for the iPhone would file a complaint which would get Amazon to investigate into the matter.

in any case, it is surprising that amazon does not maintain an inventory of their products in their warehouses. i imagine that it is going to be pretty complicated to keep track of what was ordered and what was shipped... but if amazon with 20 years of experience in this field cannot do it, good luck to other companies.
