Transfer Jio eSim to a new iPhone

I have a Jio eSim, but I don't live in India anymore. I would like to upgrade my iPhone and would like my Jio eSIM transferred to the new iPhone without Jio's intervention.
This article says I should be able to do so, but when I did a trial using another phone, I don't see the option to transfer the eSim during setup or later.

Has anyone done this before?

The feature depends on carrier support for it. As far as I know, in India, Airtel and Jio do not allow you to transfer eSIMs without involving them.

199 SMS needs to be sent with Domestic IMSI, which is possible only when you are connected to the native operators networks. Can't do it with another operator, when you will be using a different IMSI.

Doesn't routing your everything VoWi-Fi traffic via India let's you not be on international roaming at the moment?

You cannot route VoWiFi traffic via India using VPN on smartphones. Carrier traffic (VoWiFi) is isolated from core OS traffic which can be routed using VPN.
Also if you try to run VPN on router level ie. On openwrt then VoWiFi won't connect. Because carrier use IP filtering at their end for VoWifi establishment (Thats how they know you are on international roaming even if you are using VoWifi)
So, good luck.

VoWiFI can be used to send voice, video, SMS, etc depending on if it is enabled by your carrier (as well as roaming carrier, if you are abroad). It’s all IMS stack and features like RCS can also be enabled on this stack.

The actual reason is that your device carrier settings are used to identify where you are. So other than IP filtering by your carrier, simply latching into a foreign network changes your IMSI. If you check, VoWifi doesn’t work (or works for a short while) on airplane mode. Very frequently your carrier checks which networks are in range and also tries to establish/maintain normal LTE connection with the native network, even if you are on Vowifi.
