undecided on budget as I have no clue, however cheaper the better.

Should come with at least (minimum) the following:

• 5Ghz Wi-Fi with AC650 or AC1200.
• 2 Ethernet port 10/100.
• Wireguard client.
• Wireguard server. (If it does not support wireguard server, then any other VPN server is fine, however it should be compatible Mikrotik supported VPN suite)
• Tunnel over Tunnel. (If you want clarification on what this means, then let me know)
• SIM support is optional.
• If zerotier is supported, that is a plus.

I have seen this selling for 10-11k on Amazon. A little expensive and overkill as per the specs you mentioned.

Paying such a premium for a GL, Mikrotik hAP AC2, AX2, and AX Lite seems cheaper and diverse.

Just out of curiosity, what's the purpose of a travel router?
I am asking because when I travel somewhere, I use my mobile hotspot which works fine even if I need VPN. Most of the devices today have decent protection and it's very unlikely that it will get hacked or something.

I move continuously.
The places I visit do have internet, but the wifi is horrendous.
If we talk about mobile internet, most have poor indoor reception. Hotspot is good for emergencies, but they are unstable.
Other than a simple VPN, I also need something that won't offload the entire traffic through the VPN and at the same time allow my device to communicate with each other locally.

I was checking out some cheaper options from TP-Link, most of them have bad reviews on Amazon, so I think investing in this GLi.net router might be worth the price.

Well as I mentioned above, Mikrotik is cheaper and is about the same form factor as a GL so I think the former is the better option. Unless there is something cheaper.
There is a chance that they might get stolen, hence the mention, "cheaper the better".
