Unable to get port forwarding working with Airtel ISP

Hi folks,

I'm trying to set up port forwarding to play some games. I went through a bunch of posts on the forum but could not make it work.
  1. I have my airtel router set up in bridge mode and using Deco M9 plus as routers.

  2. My deco mesh units (2) are connected wirelessly and I'm connecting my PC to the 2nd unit wirelessly as well.

There can be several reasons. You need to evaluate each and every one.
  • You could be behind CGNAT (you get non-routable private IP) - Airtel is phase-wise switching to CGNAT everywhere
  • Your firewall on AIRTEL router is not turned off. Some Airtel routers continue to operate with limited features even if they are in Bridge
  • Other firewalls on Deco and/or end destination
  • Incorrect settings in port forwarding rules
  • required service not running on destination
  • ..and a few more other reasons
 
Same problem, tried everything but still not luck, VPN shows port 500 and 4500 blocked even though my pc is in dmz mode.

  • I am definitely behind CGNAT. But that should not be a problem with IPv6?
  • How do I turn off firewall on the Airtel router?
  • Port forwarding rules are configured properly in Deco.
  • The destination service is not the problem since it's being managed by the game.

Thanks for confirming that you are on IPv6.
You need to connect to your Airtel router by LAN Cable preferably. Access the web interface and check if there's firewall and completely turn it off. Temporarily turn off your Deco while you do so.
I had F670L and when firewall was Med or High set, IPv6 incoming was blocked despite that ONT router being in Bridge.
Hence suggested to check this point.

  1. Enable IPv6 and disable IPv6 firewall on ONT.

  2. Connected to my Deco over ethernet. I'm getting proper IPv4 and IPv6 IP.

  3. I disabled IPv4 on ethernet and was able to access the internet over IPv6. But I was getting the following error in-game now (same results with Windows firewall completely turned off)

I called Airtel CC to assign me an IPv4 address from their public pool. They insist that the only way to get non CGNAT IP is by taking a static IP. I'm not eager to pay that amount for a problem that I should not be facing in the first place.

Are there alternate ISPs in Bangalore who provide public IPs without extra charge?
 
Out of curiosity, if there's any ISP in India other than BSNL that offers public IP, I would be interested to know. When known big names have already switched to CGNAT, from where small players can offer 1 public ip per customer?
 
It seems that Airtel technicians are full of crap.
They keep spouting the same nonsense "Sir I spoke to the backend team but they are saying as of this moment you need static IP for port forwarding."
I tried in vain to explain that opening a port might be difficult for IPv4 behind CGNAT but for IPv6 it's just adding an exception to the ISP firewall. Some of the responses I got from them:
  • Technician assigned to my case: Sir Airtel does not provide IPv6. It must be your router that is getting it.
  • Backend team PoC redirected from CC: Sir can you repeat the thing you said? IP what? IP6?
These people have no idea nor interest in actually trying to solve my issue. They're annoying me into getting a static IP at this point.
