Use a Netgear router instead of Excitel GX router

Hi, I have a Excitel connection and recently got a Syrotech Ethernet media converter and a Netgear router for a cheap price from a friend who was leaving town. So my question was can I use this Syrotech EMC and the Netgear router instead of Excitel router. I tried this Fibre optics > Syrotech EMC > Ethernet Cable > Netgear router connection and tried setting up the WAN, but couldn't be successful. I tried PPPoE and gave the username and password and was unsure of other settings, I couldn't get the internet working, so is this possible or I'm supposed to use the Excitel router only? If yes please let me the setup/configuration process.

Note: my router allows mac cloning
