With a model similar to eBay and Amazon.Walmart to expand in e-retailing in India, planning marketplace model akin to Amazon, eBay - The Economic Times
Months after it put its brick-andmortar expansion plans in India in deep freeze, Walmart Stores is quietly readying a major e-retailing push in India with an electronic marketplace business model akin to that used by US-based Amazon and eBay Inc.Sources familiar with the world's biggest retailer's plans told ET that a team of 15-17 people under Walmart India's COO Arvind Mediratta and including global veteran and V-P for operations in the India office, Steve Rodrigues, have been working on developing an electronic platform that is expected to go live in the next three to four months.Walmart is expected to finalise the brand name for the website that will serve as its e-marketplace in India. It will initially serve wholesale consumers by Marchend." The project has been on for seven to eight months and has gathered pace in the past four to five months," says a person with direct knowledge of the situation, who requested not to be identified. "It will be the Amazon and eBay business model." Since India bars foreign retailers from selling wares directly online to consumers, both Amazon and eBay, the global giants of Internet-based commerce, now operate a socalled marketplace model under which they offer their platforms to other vendors and collect commissions in return.

They could use same model or rather loophole in offline marketing also. Ask cos to keep products at their retail outlets cum warehouse and sell it for commission only. But offline venture would attract media eyeballs inturn making govt to close the loophole so online for safe side.

Market place model means more scoundrels peddlying their *hitty wares :( :pissed-off: We already have so many of them already.

From what I see, they cannot sell under their own branding yet. Even Kindles are sold through third party retailers like Croma on Amazon.in.
