What is HDMI port ? How to use it & What cable should I buy ?

Hi, Recently I bought a new Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop. It says it has a HDMI port. First of all what is this port used for ? How am I supposed view the port details in my laptop ? Do I have to buy a new cable for it ? If so what is the preferable brand ?

Please educate me.

I doubt if laptops have only input. Some may have both, to maybe view phone/tablet etc content?
