They are angry that after having paid license fees to offer a service legally, they find that no one is knocking on their doors since it is so much cheaper via broadband. This is always going to happen. Just because you make a technology illegal (pc to phone for e.g.) doesn't mean that the technology has disappeared.

What is extremely illegal right now is that you run a voip server and receive calls over internet and then send those calls to mtnl/bsnl/other local providers . As of making outgoing calls there is not any restriction but they do want providers to pay 8% on it .

well you could get a skype phone.... hook it on the net.... how are they gonna come to know also???

This is an unlicensed service, being viewed as a national security threat by the department of telecommunictaions

how much time does it take to record something in wav/mp3 format and pass it over secure FTP or HTTPS?

dont terrorist communicate internally over phone or by any other means today as well? that too india to india/mumbai to mumbai calls? how many bomb blasts cud they prevent to date?

this is just to mint money. DTH/Mobile operators/ISPs they dont have anywork. just hinder the govt. work, take money from people and DONT give proper service. dont follow TRAI/DOT guidelines and keep filing cases and objections.

ISPs main job is to give proper internet connection. they are not giving cheap stable unlimited connection and then venturing into VoIP market and not letting others giving cheap/free service to enter the market.

umm voip is certainly not illegal in india. sify and other companies sell voip phones and connections openly.

yes.. but they have obtained license. their problem is they dont want to offer quality service and reasonable charged service. and yet want to block ppl from using other service in the name of "national security".
