Wireless controller for gaming on PC

Looking for a wireless controller for playing games on PC(windows platform). I will mostly be playing games like assassins creed and maybe a few FPS. I am able to play RTS using mouse/keyboard but would prefer an controller for the rest as currently i have my PC output connected to a tv and its difficult playing these games sitting up close.

Thanks. The wireless option requires a xbox360 receiver is it ok to go for the wirelesses controller receiver combo or go for wired USB controller.

Xbox wired controller comes with a long cable, you can go for wired .
