So the radio does work on the phone without earphones but still asks for them for better connectivity. Are earphones that work as antenna different from regular earphones?

No ji.. Any ordinary earphones are enough will act as antenna or to be precise as aerial for the internal antenna...

i hope the fm app has an option to not play the radio through the earphones when i attach them? it's stupid. is there any accessory that i can just put in the headphone socket that works as an antenna and does not steal the speaker component from the phone?

If you have any old pair of earphones, just cut the 3.5mm jack and place it in phones' 3.5mm port. It'll work as antenna and you can play radio
