The OLTs are affected not the ONTs. Also, there's no such thing as FTTH Modem. A modem is for modulation/demodulation. Fibre Optics is not modulated at the last mile.
Optical modulators do exist, but nowhere near the customer premises.

Well, actually it helps, IMO. It helps to avoid getting caught by kids. However, the dark web is not made of kids. They are made of professional and nasty hackers. Also, having a good router / FTTH modem that provides regular security updates really helps in the long run.

Turn off ICMP global, enable SPI, disable remote management, problem solved. Nobody can ping or connect to your device then.
Botnets run on your OSes rarely on a router. Even if it was on the router, it would be because of default logins.
Then the correct dumbed-down term would be "media converter".
