Did you experience aweful connection for last few weeks ?

@eriek_halenx thank you so much for your helpful response but like @Dark_Nate even I have the same question, why the DHCP on both the devices ?

I'll just run you through what my setup is like...so to setup my router I had called up the TP-Link support and they asked me to change the IP address of the router to something in the range of the ONU's default IP range, like 192.168.1.x and asked me to disable the DHCP on the router.

Now, should I disable the DHCP on the ONU ? and enable it on the tplink router ? or enable it on both the devices ?

In the meantime I have blocked the suspicious domains through modifying the "hosts" file in the windows folder, so far its working good at least on my desktop, but the issue is there with other devices.

P.s. as I wrote this post and was going through the ONU interface after your suggestions I found an option under the security tab of blocking certain URLs. I have keyed in the respective URLs that I found to be causing the issue. So let's see how things go from here. Also hoping it won't cause an issue with the ONU considering it's el cheapo and will probably need some more processing power to filter out these URLs.

@harshvkrm Did you get bridge mode to work or not?

If yes, you can leave DHCP enabled on ONT because it'll only work for the extra LAN port(s) not the bound interface.

If not, then yes, disable DHCP on router to prevent Double NAT.

Yes, DHCP on any one device.

My router currently allocates DHCP to devices. My ont doesn't allocate DHCP properly and had to be restarted. It's also a bare bones "el-cheapo" one 😅 , also number of devices is about 30.

Dns together with a browser plugin seems the best solution imho. Yes host file / ont black listing should work. But the malicious websites can change their domain / also new one's can appear.

I am not trying the bridge mode stunt at home right now...for if anything blows Up in the onu, which I am sure will one day considering how it’s built, I will be marooned forever. The service here is so slow and poor that they take 6months time to fix it in normal days, I do not even want to know what will happen during a pandemic :p
 
@eriek_halenx the thing with BSNL adware is that it’s domain is more consistent than BSNL’s network and service. So all the ads come from this common source, which will stay this way I guess for a month or so. As and when it changes I will be ready to block that as well. :cool:

Well, if you put in the bridge mode, you're saving the crap ONT from routing processing related tasks, so you'd be reducing processing and therefore heat, which in turn will extend its crap lifespan.
 
@Dark_Nate I completely agree with you on that, but I am scared that considering my lack of technical knowhow in this matter what if the ONT pulls a Kanika Kapoor on me, even the doctors won’t come to my rescue :p So I am living by the lines of 3idiots movie “Jaisa chal raha hai chalne de” for now.
btw any suggestions for a good onu/ont which can be purchased in India ? price is not an issue. I saw a couple of posts from a few members here buying these Huawei ones and shipping them from China.
