ACT no longer offering static IPs?

A friend of mine wanted a static IP but apparently the rep said that "Due to strict govt rules" they don't give it to home connections. Is it true?

Then why does BSNL provide static IP on demand for home broadband users ?
ACT doesn't have enough ipv4 addresses so they're coming up with fake reasons.

Then they'll ask him to take business connection which will cost 3-5 times more with even less speed and FUP.

Exactly, BSNL has a lot of IPv4 addresses so it doesn't care. ACT doesn't have enough and can't get more either I think.

weren't they charging like 2500 bucks per year or was it per month for static ip?

Yeah, 2000+tax per year for plans with FMC of Rs 1000 or above.

@humblefool Just curious though, what are the use cases for which your friend needs a static IP address? Or it just due to the lack of a dynamic public IP address?

Most likely due to running out of IPv4 addresses. The only move forward is large scale adoption & implementation of IPv6 by not only network operators but by content providers, CDN's etc. Interestingly, AS18209 had begun IPv6 rollout in Bangalore a couple of years ago.
