You can purchase any ADSL modem I bought Netgear model. Costed about 999Rs.

To return MTNL modem - you need to go to exchange with written request.

Keep 3 copies - 1 for Customer care-1 for broadband department and 1 for your acknowledgement

Give Modem-Adapter-splitter-Cat5 cable-telephone cable otherwise they may charge you for missing item!

Broadband dept will put a stamp saying items received.
Then go to customer care people and they will update their system.

DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE receipt in case they continue to charge rent in future!

Sorry but what is customer care- i mean i have never seen any at the exchange, also i want wi-fi functionality in the modem so what budget to keep in mind(i don't want to spent more since i have a measly 512kbps connection). Thanks in advance

Modems/routers are usually replaced by the company when under warranty. And no one bothers repairing it after warranty expires as the cost is usually as much as buying a new modem/router.

Modems on rents are of course supported by MTNL in this case. So you do not have to worry about them going bad. But routers are simple devices and tend to not go bad unless you get a lemon I guess. As long as the power supply is good, they should last for years. In all my years of computing I have had one bad router. I am not even sure if it went bad as one day it stopped working and I got myself a new one without going through the routine reset and reconfiguration process. It was one of the Linksys WRT54G variants so I did not bother with it and got myself a N router.

Sorry but what is customer care

Customer care is people who care for customers when they reach for help!!

But incase of MTNL it may not be true!!

PS: In MTNL mumbai they normally call is QCS - Quick customer service which by the way is NEVER QUICK!! hahahaha
