Hi,

I just read this page and it says that with AirTel's 4 Mbps broadband one can download a 1 GB movie in 34 minutes compared with 9 hours taken in case of 256 Kbps speed.

With a 4Mbps connection users can download a 1 GB movie in 34 minutes compared with 9 hours taken in case of 256 Kbps speed.

The Hindu Business Line : Bharti doubles broadband speeds at no extra cost

So I did the following math, correct me if I am wrong.

1 GB = 1024 MB = 1024*1024 KB (KiloBytes not KiloBits) = 1048576 KB

34 minutes = 34*60 = 2040 seconds

So if you do

1048576 KB/2040 secs = 514 KBps (KiloBytes per second), approximately 0.5 MB per second.

Since 1 Byte = 8 bits

514 KB = 514*8 = 4112 Kbps (Kilo bits per second as mentioned by many ISPs).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now let us compate the same download of 1 GB done in 9 hours as mentioned in the article.

1 GB = 1024 MB = 1024*1024 KB (KiloBytes not KiloBits) = 1048576 KB

9 hours 9*60 minutes = 9*60*60 seconds = 32400 seconds

So if you do

1048576 KB/32400 secs = 32.36 KBps (KiloBytes per second)

Since 1 Byte = 8 bits

32.36 KB = 32.36*8 = 258.88 Kbps (Kilo bits per second as mentioned by many ISPs).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is great if it is for real for the AirTel 4 Mbps broadband users. Please let me know if this really works out to your own real life experience. Thanks

i dont know whether your maths is right or wrong .. i can download 800 MB in 1 hour with my 2MBPS Reliance connection .. so yes downloading 1 GB with 4MBPS in 30 - 35 mins is very much possible ...

That is a good news then for India, how much you pay per month for your connection of 2 Mbps?

im actually in their 1Mbps unlimited plan with night boost of 2Mbps unlimited means i get 1Mbps speed from 8am to 10pm and 2Mbps speed from 10pm to 8am the next day . i pay about 1650 - 1700 INR per month inclusive of tax .. the best part is that there is no FUP with Reliance broadband ..

I can D/L 1GB in less than 20 min. Got Airtel Optical Fiber 6 Mbps connection.
