1 Mbps = Rs 920 Railtel broadband

*Port speeds are on 1:4 contention ratio Contention ratio is the ratio in which no. of users content for bandwidth on the same port. In short, 4 people will be using the same port/card at the DSLAM in the exchange. So, if the port/card is 4Mbps, then it's contented between 4 users. It means that you will get anywhere between 1/4th to full of the mentioned speed. Heh.. I was keeping an eye on this, this sucks anyway. As they have already mentioned the contention ratio, you cannot complain if you get 256kbps on your 1mbps line :wall:

well that doesnt mean that it has to be 1/4th speed.even bsnl writes minimum 256 kbps & maximum 2 mbps, but still people get close to 2 mbpsonly some person who actually uses it can say for sure whats the case

guys, just think that, this is not even useful for all people around bangalore.. may be surrounding of 2-5 kilometers. dont even think it is covering that much.. being a bangalorian, even we dont benefit !! waste of time....

Just picked this up from BSNL website.. HTH

Contention Ratio
To provide a cost effective service - all ADSL services world-wide are ‘contended’ (shared). These contention ratios are applied in the backbone and international part of the network. In lay man's language it just means "How many people are fighting for the same internet connection line as you?". All customers are guaranteed the “Plan” rate up to the local exchange or the ADSL equipment to which they are connected. Contention begins at the connection from your local exchange to the ISP which is shared by other users. On the shared part of the network a 20:1 contention ratio would mean that a 256 kbps connection would be shared by you and a maximum of 19 others. In reality this is very unlikely to happen and the customer would find the connection much faster than dial-up modems. In actuallity the number of people sharing bandwidth is much more complex and it tends to be like say 3400 users with 512kbps ADSL connection sharing a 34Mbps connection, which means that a few users running at full speed have less of an effect on other users. ADSL relies on individual users not making unreasonable traffic demands on the network to provide fast access speeds for all. If you are not getting the speed you expect, it can be not only due to the contention ratio but also due to many other factors including the congestion at the remote site you are accessing.

the railways supposedly have the best communication in india.. if BSNL is made to unbundle the last mile.. then.. bsnl broadband is gonna go from the leader, to probably the 2nd best..n.. not to mention the tremendous slash in prices..

if this is true , we are moving way ahead than any asian country in tech world, it could even be possible that , india can one day steal american hosting business entirely, want to see that day now

south east asia is doing that. prices are like half to quarter of american servers. india needs broadband. cheap broadband.
