1 Mbps = Rs 920 Railtel broadband

I did complain about Airtel using the term 'upto' when specifying speeds under any given plan, TRAI guidelines clearly state that the term 'upto' shud not be used and the minimum speed promised shud be given. Apart from that plans marketed as BroadBand shud have to be with minimum downstream rate of 256kbps.
Anyone subscribed to this ISP shud complain and force them to come clear about their plan speeds. Penalty against the ISP maybe severe if they dont follow the TRAI guidelines.:P

dont you think their 256k plan is violating TRAI norms.TRAI said that 256k is broadband but they advertise it as 256k but with the content ratio 1:4.
I remember that some airtl user complained to airtel about home 999 plan having content ratio 1:2 but it was advertised as a 256k plan and airtel had to remove the content ratio all together.
Someone should tell them that they are violating trai norms

i don't think that should be the case pal - you're getting it all wrong, many isp's don't reveal their actual contention ratio because it sucks & people might go crazy looking at the pathetic condition they are in.

Railwire is proudly displaying their contention ration because it again is one of the best in indian markets. for example contention ratio of bsnl is 1:50 !

check the link: BROAD BAND

on the contrast airtel is known to have a contention ratio of 1:2 even on their unlimited plan - any comments on this ?

airtel content ratio is 1:1.
railwire is voilating trai norms by advertising 256k but with 1:4.
i had called them in summer but yet no action has been taken.
someone should tell thier unethical practise to TRAI.

it cant be 1:2 even for airtel..many times the contention ration is confused with upload:download ratio. Even on the railtel website i think it is the upload is to download ratio that is mentioned..normally broadband connections have contention ratio's b/w 1:20 to 1:50..

any articles on this so that any doubts relating to contention ratio is cleared once in for all.

Here's one:

Contention ratio refers to how much of ISP bandwidth is shared between users.
For instance, a 20:1 contention ratio means if there are 20 users on the network at once, they will each have about a 1m/bit connection. When I say ‘network’ I’m referring to the internet space ISPs assign to the users. This system usually works without problems but relies on users making reasonable traffic demands on the network. If a user is a heavy downloader, he will eat into the other users’ bandwidth.
So what does this mean for you? When it comes to the contention ratio, keep in mind your service will be better if the rate is lower. With a low contention ratio, more bandwidth will be available to individual users on the network at any time. A contention rate of 8:1 is excellent. Anything under 10 seems impressive from ISPs. Most services offer something in the range of 20:1 to 50:1.
Business users should be looking for something with a 5:1 contention ratio or lower. This rate is of course more expensive but will be worth the good service.
Be wary of ISPs which do not advertise a contention ratio on its website. Look for an ISP provider with a lower contention ratio. You will not necessarily get faster service but it will be more stable.

So contention ratio has nothing to do b/w differences in UL/DL speeds but is about how many people with share a specified bandwidth in the worst case scenario

Freak I stay in Marathalli.. I applied online..and they say they cant give me connection.. :@

yeah content ratio is how many people with share a specified bandwidth in the worst case scenario.but the 256 and 512k plan violate trai norms as in 256k when even 2 users share the connection the speed goes 128k which is violating trai broadband guidelines.i had called them and told them about this.now i hav eto tell this to TRAI.

wow :O i seriously hope that railtel and hfcl both spread their network throughout the country (hope Delhi is next).. this would give mtnl, bsnl tata etc a run for their money

Nobody as yet has commented on their performance from what i know.

BTW i called up their CC today because i got to know that are signing up with local cable operators for providing their internet services. CC asked me to contact Mr.Bhagyaraj, Sales Head or some higher officer of their CC at 9611288335 - who said that in a month they would have completed the process of lying cables till Vijaynagar area in Bangalore & then they would rope in a few local cable providers to extend their service. the sad part if that Whitefield where they lauched their pilot service & Vijaynagar - where i stay are 2 different corners of Bangalore
