I got TB Segate External with Power Adopter & 500MB Segate which doesn't need any external Power .Both are Working Fine. Been using them for last Six Months

Take 2.5" drive. Even with a power adapter it would be smaller.

And for the person who said that External drives have bad sectors: The drives are identical. You can use any external drive internally connecting it to PATA/SATA

With its internal connection compatibility there is not much difference in the external hard drive as it can be put to dual use.

I have an 1TB Western Digital My Book External drive. for over a year now.I bought it around 5500rsIt works fine. infact it is always connected to my system and i keep using it regularly.Well over the time i have observed that data transfer speeds have reduced as i have totally filled it up. and sometimes it starts making creaking sounds which make me paranoid i asked my other friends who have it , they say its normal.I think overall am satisfied with my HDD and might purchase another 1TB or 2TB one soon .

my seagate 1TB 7200.12 makes a creaking sound randomly! and i am shit scared too. :D my computer settings put it to sleep after inactivity. i disabled that option. because everytime i tried to access the disk... there was a moment of pause and the noise... as it came to life. just disabled it and it has been better since then.

^ About that creaking sound, AFAIK it is completely normal with the Seagate 7200.12 1TB drives. Many people also have been reported to get that noise when the drive spins up.The noise comes every time the disk spins up. So when you had enabled option to put the HDD to sleep after inactivity, the disk would be powered down and when you access it, it would power up again and thus the noise as it spins up.Monitor your hard disk's health with utilities like HDTune or HDTach.

+1 to what viralbug said, use HDTune to do a disk check. Also, make your S.M.A.R.T is enabled via BIOS. It might give you a forewarning if your hard disk suddenly decides to die on you.
