I'm thinking of buying a higher capacity hard disk, a 320 or 500 GB one. I've heard that these HDDs slow down your computer. At present I've 1 GB RAM on a P-4 3.0 Ghz, and I am thinking of adding another 1 GB - would it solve the problem of the computer slowing down? All those who do have such HDDs, what is your experience with them? And how exactly have you fitted them? There are the portable ones, but they are too costly, and there are the internal ones, but I just came to know of another method, a USB method, where the USB pin or whatever it is called costs like rs. 400, and then you can plug in your normal (internal type) HDD SATA by USB, and remove it and carry it around whenever you want. A portable 500 GB one would cost around 8000 rs., while I've enquired of the price of an internal one here (in Ahmedabad), and it is somewhere around 3,400 rs (all the others whom I asked were quoting 5000 rs. prices) - now if I add that USB pin to this internal one, within 4000 rs. I would be able to get a portable HDD. This is what my computer guy has told me - he himself has connected a 320 GB SATA in this manner. If there are people on the forum who have done the same - does downloading from the internet to the USB HDD have the same speed?I'd really appreciate some help here.Thanks.

seagate is having firmware problem now a days, thats why i m not buying 1.5 TB HDD .its cheap one now but WD is little bit more costly and i never used WD .i m using 2*500 seagate HDD in which one is Model: ST3500320AS .but its working fine .i can't update coz dont have space to backup that 500 gb HDDbeeter go with WD at present time if you want to play safe:ashamed:

cheap ?? yea WD "green" is cheap in price n performance coz its spin 7200 at active stage n rotate 5200 RPM at idle stage!! WD cavior black 1 TB is same price as 1.5 Tb seagate and seagate has much better performance than WD cavior black. ;)

i have 3 500GB seagate internal hard disk, all are working fine, i have around 400GBs of movies. First i tried Sony DVD-R, to store them. i purchased a pack of 100DVDs. (1400/- ), in 10 days i burned all. but 5 or 6months later, read error problems started. I again purchased 100 DVD pack and again made a backup of all movies etc. but same result. Then i purchased 2 500GB HD ( 2950/- each) and dump all movies in both HDDs (one hdd is connected with computer and one i packed and stored in shelf. One day hard disk connected to computer failed, i went ot seacare centre for replacement. and purchased another hdd. I got replacement within 15 days.....before i had 160gb samsung HDD, samsung service centre took 3 months for replacement when it failed

Not sure if I've asked this earlier or not: does it matter which company HD you get? Or does it have to be Seagate?
yes it certainly does matter. we would like our hdds to last as long as they could and wouldnt want them to go bad making us lose data. reliable hdd and good after sales support is required. WD and seagate both are the best in terms of both.

yup but WD never beat Seagate performancewise :thumb:.i m still waiting to firmware issue solve so i can buy 1.5 TB Seagate HDD
seagate has already released a firmware updtae long back. even if your drive is affected you can update the firmware and it would work just perfectly. also for updating your existing drives, you dont need to back up. you can update the firmware of your drive without losing data.

in general WD is cheaper than seagate. in terms of performance both are similar.
i would suggest you to go for the WD green power 1.5tb. though it is a bit slow, marginally that too and you won't be able to make out the difference much. it is silent and produces less heat making the drive last longer. its a better bet.

Got a 1 TB drive; its ST31000333AS.Its an Internal drive, and cost Rs. 6200. Maybe it would be cheaper in other places like Delhi, but here this is what it cost; maybe the price could have been brought down by another 200 Rs. if I had contacted a bulk dealer or something. No more tension about lack of disk space! :yahoo: And it works smoothly, hasn't slowed down the computer or anything. Also installed more RAM. Earlier I had 1 GB RAM (512 X 2), but my motherboard has only two RAM slots. I installed a new 2 GB module in one slot, and left one of the 512 MB ones in the other, but the computer wouldn't detect more than 2 GB; then I consulted the MB manual and saw that it only supported up to 2 GB :@ Didn't have any option here, so I gave the two 512 MBs to the computer guy who'll try to sell them. I've heard of something called USB RAM, which is maybe a pen drive that works as a RAM, I don't know for sure. Not that I really need more, but still more would be better, especially since I've installed Vista, and RAM is cheap (the 2 GB one cost rs. 1000).
