Hi Guys,

I am currently residing in Kilpauk / Chennai & I am using BSNL for the past few years.. I am happy with the services rendered... a few hi cups here & there but still lovable as the speed is quite good and the service man does come within 24 hours when I call him directly. The only reason why I am looking out for a change is because of the download limit of 20GB gets over quite fast & post which the speed goes down to 512. Unfortunately ACT Broadband is unavailable in my area, hence I am looking at Tikona and You Broadband (I have ruled out Airtel because a lot of my friends are unhappy with the service and frequent disconnections). My question is which of the two (Tikona/You) is better? Any users in the Kilpauk / New Avadi road area? Are the speeds relatively at par to what they claim? and most importantly are there frequent disconnections and how are the service guys?

Thanks in advance...

Hey, so Tikona was a bust as it is not available in my area. So after a month 3 ISPs (ACT, Tikona, Click2Connect) have said no & the representative from You Broadband is not showing interest to even come & register. So I am left with two options i.e either to stay with BSNL and opt for the Rs1800 plan where I will have to go down from 4Mbps to 2Mbps so as to double my FUP to 40GB or opt for Reliance wired line "Thunder 1099" plan. I am really not sure about the line & connectivity issues that customers face and also I am not sure about the contention ratio (1:10) as I believe it would be in effect from day 1 as there is no download limit in this 4Mbps plan. I wouldn't mind even if I around 3Mbps. So what would you suggest I do? And does the contention ratio really affect the download & upload speed if I have to share it with 9 other people?

Get Reliance as a test for a few months. Keep BSNL as a backup connection for a few months. Permanently would be better. Switch to a low end plan for times when Reliance goes down. In a few weeks you would find out if keeping Reliance is a good idea or not. I experimented and now I use Reliance full time. Have an Airtel connection for backup. Reliance has its issues but when it works it is pretty fucking great for the price they charge. So I make do with the extra expense of the backup connection. Funny enough the 'backup' airtel connection costs me more than the Reliance's connection because the FUP limits on Airtel are so fucking bad.

permanently ?? lol... I get it... won't really know until I try. The "Thunder 1099" plan seemed like a steal (4Mbps with unlimited downloads & no FUP) & anybody would be a fool to not take it but it just seems to be too good to be true. I just hope that the contention ratio does not bite me in the rear as there is no FUP ....

contention ratio does not matter. you are supposed to get 80% of advertised speeds in any case. in case of reliance that would be around 3.4mbps. i get the same. anything below 3mbps and it is a valid reason to complain.

Hey.. just an update.. I picked up Reliance... 1250 plan... so far so good... speed is good..as u mentioned I am getting around 3.5Mbps..... connection line is good... only issue is that I gotta log in everyday & it becomes a pain if my desktop isn't the one logging on as the first user of the day... a few more issues here n there.. Hope it would also get resolved..... but worst of all is that the technician hasn't set up my wires in a safe manner. He has cut open the main protective bit from the line wire n the DSL wire n has twisted n joined the cable... gonna have to escalate it as he keeps putting me off.. Hopefully I will say goodbye to BSNL by the end of the month.. Hopefully there are no surprises in my bill.. XD

Looks like they closed two tickets without contacting me or fixing the solution. gaah... Did you have any trouble in creating a new ID for your my services page? I am unable to proceed after filling in the CAN & BAN details. The page just loads back after I submit the details. Does it take a few weeks for it to actually allow me to create a log in ID or do you think it's a technical fault ?
