network neutrality is not a law in india. they can do whatever they can legally. for now.

few test which can be used to identify is there is throttling. CMIIW , but ISP can throttle thier bandwidth respective of which protocol at office hours for high speed users..

exactly , there is no law that says they can throttle either.. So this will make this activity illegal too..
Is TRAI Sleeping ?> ?

i have used internal tests in Vuze to check for bandwidth shaping etc etc. no results. in fact, even using SSH Tunnel failed in my case. have no idea what exactly they are doing. but my torrent speeds suck during the day time. so i do it all during the night. works good enough for me.

I am little curious , did airtel say that they dont support torrent ? I think, In general no ISP as of now can discriminate any particular application and interfere with the bandwidth shaping. I dont really get the idea of third party application ..? CAn you explain on that ?

@hitman can you see if there is capping with encryption for inbound and outbound connection in utorrent setting ?

For me, RC4 encryption DOES NOT appear to be capped with a particular program running in the background. I really don't want to mention it because I'm sure Airtel is poking their nose here.

how can something be illegal if they probably have in their terms and conditions that they would do what they need to do to maintain the stability and performance of their network?

do you really think that torrent throttling can be proved illegal in indian courts? seriously?

@ryan :D PM us some good stuff. :D

Then they are moving from "Neutral providers" . With recent net neutrality law passed in U.S , it makes absolutely illegal to throttle any application IIRC .Today torrent , tomorrow they might throttle other IPTV protocol other than thier own IPTV offering for competition sake.

throttling of bandwidth during peak hours is completely acceptable.. but not a particular application or protocol.

@hitman can you try downloading a big file from microsoft and see what your speed is and check again with the torrent speed ?

network neutrality laws are passed in USA. but they do not apply on mobile networks. so even they have work to do. here? we are still trying to make 512kbps as minimum broadband speeds. network neutrality is not high on priority list for anyone.

I rpelied that part for this :

well it can be argued that airtel practices for which laws are not framed yet and we can eventually get net neutrality in India :P Fortunately U.S has EFF , here we dont have any group to represent net neutrality and leaving entirely in the hands of ministers will be epic disaster. I think we have gone off-topic by miles.

Will see what hitman comes up with. is it throttling to particular protocol or it in general during PEAK hours

throttling is on torrents only. i am using socialfolders to download my flickr pictures. it downloads at full speeds during the day time.

Yeah .. Throttling is just on torrents .. Direct downloads do give me full speed even at day time ..@naveen_reloaded .. can u give me some torrent file which u want me to check .. or give me the link here .. I guess if its from microsoft server so it must be legal ..My mistake.. I guess u wanted me to check direct download and then torrent download .. I get full speed on direct downloads .. So I know it has nothing to do with my connection .. It just wht airtel do from backend ..
