talked to the sec to dir DOT.HE will call me.Now i have to call ndtv and ibnMUAHAHA,i will not stop until i get an official explanation. All i need is some ggn airtel users esp admin to organize together and file a case at the consumer forum.admin i am EverReady, all i need is you to join and other regional airtel users can do the same thing.

you are forgetting another point here. they are the one fixing the price we pay. they are charging the money they initially believed we should be paying for the service they have been providing for years. nothing changed. bandwidth has not become expensive all of a sudden. prices of the higher packages have not been reduced in a long long time. we pay what they ask for and now they claim we are being unfair to them by using what we pay for? how is that logical?

bandwidth logically becomes cheaper with times. internet access has to become cheaper with time. airtel is doing it all wrong. they are being jerks with their latest moves. if i am to believe another thread running in this forum, they are now starting to block online voip services. the situation is getting worse with time...
Any contract cannot be life-long. As long as there is a reasonable notice/warning period and the the customer is is not cheated and has sufficient options available to him to go for alternate solutions, it is OK. I suppose business decisions are taken to protect the interests of both the business and the customer; doing harakiri will harm both.

bandwidth is dirt cheap in Singapore..

Curious! What are the rates?
How is iptv doing is singapore?

ahem. just wanted to make it clear. iptv has nothing to do with internet... it does not use online bandwidth.

Well, without going into the matter of the questionability of AIRTEL's ethics in calling a plan 'unlimited' when they are 'throttling' the speed after reaching a limit, I agree with you when you say a contract cannot be life-long and as long as there is a reasonable notice/warning period and the the customer is not cheated and has sufficient options available to him to go for alternate solutions, it is OK. Airtel has taken a decision to implement this notorious 'Fair Usage Policy' on 07th February and presto! straightaway they impose it on the customer without so much as noticw e period of even one second! This so-called business decision is nothing but outright cheating of the customers and if there is any mass exodus to be witnessed it would be no 'harakiri' but a meaningful 'jehad' against Airtel's short-sighted avarice.

They should have informed their customers 1 month prior to implementing this with a printed letter and via phone..A lot of people probably would be calling customer care when they see their speeds reduced to half..and CC might just be giving them the 'did you reboot your router routine'..Also it should have been applicable only for new customers..old customers should be allowed to keep their plans because that is what they signed up for..Its a huge step backwards when we should be getting more speeds on unlimited plans our downloads are being throttled instead..takes 10 minutes just to load a youtube HD video..is this really broadband ? They don't guarantee their international speeds either which is understandable but ideally we should be getting close to what we pay for..this is what QoS TRAI was probably talking about..on MTNL I'm lucky to get 400kbps on a 2mbps line during daytime to international servers.

exactly. airtel has never forced a change on customers on an existing plan. old customers always had the option to remain on their existing connections whether the new plans were cheaper or expensive providing the exact same services.

All the more reason why we cannot dismiss the matter as some sort of blunder committed by AIRTEL. It is difficult to imagine that AIRTEL will have the audacity to cheat customers this way unless, mind you, unless, they have some sound backing from heavy weights from the corridors of power in the Govt.

My letter to TRAI and DOT about unfair "Airtel Fair Usage Policy".

I request other broadband users to email the TRAI and DOT about unfair "Airtel Fair Usage Policy". Let us come together through this forum and fight this unfair policy. Irrespective of the end result we all should write to the necessary authorities about such unfiar policies and voice our protest.

This call is not just for Airtel users but to all internet users becasue if this AFUP is allowed then every ISP in India will follow suit and wreck broadband in India.

I also request other users to post their response/email here in this forum

Dont forget to mention your name, address and phone as anonymous emails will not considered.

Dear Sir,

I would like to congratulate TRAI on its efforts to publish this Consultation paper on Broadband QoS - \"Bandwidth required for ISPs for better connectivity and improved quality of service\". I really admire TRAI for its initiative, forethought and the enduring work for a better quality of telecom service in India despite apathy from several quarters including the government.

With this letter I would like to bring to your notice a controversial and unfair
decision of Airtel Broadband with subject to \"Airtel Fair Usage Policy\".
Airtel Fair Usage policy has become the latest nightmare for the customers of
Airtel Broadband.

\"Airtel Fair Usage Policy\" or AFUP is totally unfair on customers with Unlimited
broadband plans as Airtel has decided to cap all unlimited plans starting from 15GB for 256kbps and reducing the speed to 128kbps for further downloads. Unlimited plans cannot and should not have restrictions on either the promised speed or unlimited data.

As per information/emails received by customers from Airtel, the limit on unlimited plans are as follows:

128 kbps = 10 GB data limit per month - after that speed reduced to 64kbps
256 kbps = 15 GB data limit per month - after that speed reduced to 128kbps
384 kbps = 20 GB data limit per month - after that speed reduced to 192kbps
512 kbps = 25 GB data limit per month - after that speed reduced to 256kbps
1 Mbps = 50 GB data limit per month - after that speed reduced to 512kbps

Airtel users have confirmed that their speeds have been reduced to half of what their package promises.

Once the unlimited broadband data is capped, it ceases to be an Unlimited plan. When the speed is reduced to less than the minimum 256kbps it ceases to be a TRAI defined broadband connection. Airtel in fact is violating the very
TRAI definition of broadband connection in India and this will be a very serious lapse by Airtel.

Airtel had merely suggested AFUP in its response to TRAI's consultation paper on \"Bandwidth required for ISPs for better connectivity and improved quality of service\". But now Airtel has gone ahead and implemented AFUP. This means that Airtel is enforcing data transfer limits on their supposedly unlimited plans without the consent of TRAI or its own customers. Does this not amount to cheating or fraud on its customers and in direct violation of TRAI's guidelines on broadband?

We have always believed Airtel to be different from other ISPs in India. They have always charged a premium and continue to do so for unlimited plans. Initially everything felt just right with Airtel Broadband. But things are apparently changing for the worse. Only TRAI can protect consumer interests from the wrath of such mind numbing decisions that put barriers in nascent growth of broadband in India.

Lots of Airtel's users have posted their grievances in various forums and blogs.

You can see story unfolding here :-

I sincerely request you to consider this letter as a complaint against unjust Airtel Fair Usage Policy and/or any other ISP in India which indulges in putting barriers in broadband speed/data caps and thus hindering the growth of broadband in India.

I would like TRAI to investigate the reasons behind implementation of such a policy by Airtel that hinders growth and that is contrary to TRAI's guidelines.

I look forward to the speedy resolution of this problem and I sincerely hope that you will do the needful and ensure the interests of telecom consumers in India are safeguarded.
