It's not as bad as it sounds - this *is* the kind of practice we are seeing the world over. However, the fact that 175GB is still the TOP plan is a bit disconcerting... you'd think they would be offering 300, 500GB and 1TB tiers by now - especially on Fibre! And considering the price of DSL with 175GB at 16m/512k is half that of Fibre with 175GB at 100m/512, I don't even think it's about the infrastructure, because DSL at 8mbit/s and Fibre at 8mbit/s (both 15GB FUPs then 512k) are priced at 1299 (DSL) and 1199 (Fibre)...It's all very bizarre - I'm trying to figure out the logic and pull the pricing apart to see if I can justify it and how.

Creating confusing tariff plans seems to be something that happens the world over. The percentage of ISPs/Telcos I've seen with tariffs that make sense is far smaller than the ones that leave me going "wait, what?" when I'm trying to compare plans.

What exactly is an FTTH Site ?

FTTH stands for Fibre to the Home...

i guess that is their terminology for areas where they have laid down fibers at.

i have sent a tweet asking them supported locations in gurgaon. i am prepared to be disappointed with a senseless response.

I would assume it goes a little further than that - probably more like where they have actually outfitted buildings or communities with Fibre... or they could be doing like Google (and myself) and trying to ascertain where the most demand is so that they can decide on which "Fibrehoods" get outfitted first.

lol at waiting for them to lay down fibers in your area. i bet they would send me a check for the installation as well /s

The thing about Airtel is that they already have connections, so upgrading your existing DSL connection to Fibre isn't that much of a stretch. The infrastructure is exactly the same up to a certain point.

While I don't know the exact specifics of Airtel's network, in all probability it would merely involve a new line from your house to where ever their fibre distribution cabinet is (probably right next to the existing DSLAM and connected to the same backhaul fibre that's already in the ground)... this new line only needs to extend as far as the building's basement or perhaps somewhere along your street or even a couple of blocks over depending on where their actual equipment is.

Better still, even if it's a couple of blocks, on the assumption that they weren't complete idiots when the built the original DSL network, blowing Fibre through existing conduits isn't that hard and doesn't involve too much digging (in many cases, none at all).

btw ftth would mean a different type of modem/router right? :D i wonder if they are going to offer iptv through ftth as well. the medianama guy was cribbing about limitations of dsl causing problems with iptv rollout.
