Am assuming your airtel phone with imessage enabled are currently attached to home India networks. I never had this problem when I was in India, so I assume this is applicable to Airtel sims with imessage enabled on roaming networks.
In my case, my Sim is attached to O2 UK Roaming network.
I really hope someone who has an airtel sim attached and working on an Airtel international partner roaming network will help to confirm my hypothesis.
