From 3G Plans in India | 3G Tariff Plans for Prepaid and Postpaid | airtel :
  • All Internet/data packs or plans (through which customer can avail discounted rate) shall only be valid for internet browsing and will exclude VoIP (Both incoming/ Outgoing).
VoIP over data connectivity would be charged at standard data rates of 4p / 10 KB (3G service) and 10p / 10 KB (2G service).
Had crossed FUP on MTNL. Was about to recharge an airtel number for 3G, when I came across the above. :speechless:

they have removed the line from the bottom. actually i never saw it. just noticed that google cache has it.

If thats true, its another first (in negative sense) by Airtel being anti-customer initiative.
use a VPN lol.
You did not get it I guess. Its on mobile, so VPN may not play any role IMO. It will affect Voice calling apps like Viber, Skype, etc installed on mobiles used to make voice calls.

Ok. I had no idea about VPN in mobile. Just noticed my Lumia 830 has VPN setup too :)
Though not sure how it could help apps to make operator believe that traffic is not VOIP.

because operators would only see traffic to one single ip which is of your VPN service provider. everything on route is encrypted. that's how vpn works.

right now, they are probably targeted traffic associated with IPs used by voip services. though i am not sure if the traffic is traveling on a secure channel, how can they catch it. maybe using deep packet inspection? god knows.

most likely. maybe they were testing the waters by seeing how the crowd would react to it?
i still am not sure how they can catch voip traffic if the service is transmitting data over https.
