They sell it as refurbished replacement. Lot of dth users in still have plain old non smart hd box.
I too had vdsl modem of airtel never received call to pick.
Fiber box pickup was quick while dth happened years after non usage.

what is the sole purpose of returning it ?

Are they giving some amount ? or HD box something else ?
I too have their box and not using from past 3 years

After I returned by Airtel HD STB, that DTH account is now removed from my Airtel Thanks App.
Earlier that DTH account was always displayed with notification at top to recharge.

I think Airtel has stopped or lowered order for Airtel STBs and provide these returned STB as refurbished to existing customers whenever complaint is raised by customers for faulty STB.

BTW I got new STB with Black Plan and its much better than previous one in terms of stability and speed. Earlier STB used to lag and reboot several times.

@ChrisM I am on Black Plan 899 which includes 100 Mbps and Rs 350 worth DTH pack. Common bill is received but it has breakup for Broadband and DTH.
Received new Android based STB. Its better than my earlier which hanged lot.
TBH I don't see much benefits as it has lots of unwanted channels and I cannot remove channels. For other channels that I want it will increase DTH pack cost.

Bit off topic..but after I closed my Airtel internet, they said they will collect the router. A guy came to whom I handed over the router but I ensured that I get the receipt from him.
It's been more than 6 months but still I get an SMS that

you have not yet returned the router, we will be happy to collect it from you.
I escalated to net@airtel.com but nothing helped the msg still comes, just that now no one has come to my doors.

When I bought Airtel internet, they asked me to go thru one terms and conditions document and got my sign on it and gave me a countercopy of that. It very clearly stated that public ip will be assigned subject to availability.
After a few years they moved to CGNAT as IPs were less and less and now I cannot complain because it is as per those terms and conditions.

If they have never given you a signed copy of terms and conditions, or if they have never shared any such document with you in digital form, you have no obligation to return the STB. I guess ironically the carton box of Airtel DTH STB says it's the property of Airtel (as per YT videos)
Even some YT videos highlight this concern that Airtel DTH forces you to return the STB if you don't recharge it for over 3 months.
Airtel has no values in first place.
