All international "Gift" packages now liable for customs duty @ 77%(?)

So I have this package coming, is bigger in size, and the status is now Custom Receive. For most other packages, it usually goes directly to Item Dispatched from Kochi IMC.

My guess is that, if it shows as Custom Receive, then the package was selected as dutiable and would most likely have customs duty attached to it.

I applied for an IEC online, and surprisingly it was issued immediately and just needed a payment of Rs 500 (plus some convenience fee). You can upload all the docs over the web, the whole thing is 100% online. Hardly took 15 min.

Without an IEC, any imports even through courier would be charged duty at 42% (category wise duty wouldn't apply), so I guess it makes sense to get one considering you don't need to run around to get a certificate.

Now, if I get a GST number also, I could potentially get a refund of the GST components also. ;)
