Has anyone used this thing? Is it safe? I don't want to install it and then find that all my data has suddenly disappeared. The help file has 84 pages, looks intimidating even to me, and talks of file system filters and virtual application layers. Or should I stick to VMWare/ MSVPC? No 'if you were using Linux..." posts please.

What? No one uses virtualization? Come on!Guess I 'll have to go through the entire manual myself.

using MSVPC2007 and am quite happy with it...didn't have to read a manual till now :Djust need to figure out how it will pick both of my network cards...it's just picking one

coolbuddy try vmware instead of that . It allows briding each virtual nic to real nic of your choice or both .
gregory is there any reason u want to move away from vmware ? I think vmware is good enought ( and server edition is free :D ) besides the altiris product is 120 day evaluation . I will still give it a try though ;)

EDIT: Altiris is not a operating system emulator .. check this Altiris SVS - a new kind of virtualization - Kevin Dente's Blog

tried VMWare long time back, like around 5 yrs back...at that time it didn't make much sense to me...may be wasn't as technically sound then :p will try it now...

VMWare and MSVPC are great if I want to test something within a fresh OS installation etc. I use them extensively on my development machine for software testing.

I want to try out Altiris SVS on my regular PC because I am always installing and uninstalling lots of software, games etc. It becomes a little irritating after some time because the cleanup does not always happen. SVS works as a bridge between the OS and the application and can completely remove all tracks of any application. No rubbish is left post-installation. That's why I want to try it. You only have to pay for Altiris if you are using it in a business environment. A personal edition is available for free. You can get it on download.com. A license key for personal use is available from altiris.com.

The Altiris product seems a little dangerous because of its complete rollback capability. That is why I asked if some one has used it without losing any data, and if so, how is it?

Well, why not try it on the Virtual PC to find out if it behaves properly? I think I might just do that... Thanks for this.

dr house wants to make someone a bakra b4 tryin it out on his own PC!
