Why do they ask you for domains though? It's not like the affiliate links would only work on those domains?

No. It means if you buy through someones affiliate link, they receive up to 10% as commission. you don't get anything.
Unless you buy through your own affiliate link. I don't know if that's allowed.

He was trying to say that he can create his own link and use that to shop.
I am not sure but I guess you might need to create a second account to benefit from that. :)
I do use my own affiliate link to shop from Flipkart. I have never been stopped but I have also not checked if I made anything out of that purchase.
Also, Flipkart at least when I created my account required me to create a separate account. Amazon uses the same account for both.
I could not found an automated way to convert all links to affiliate links like a script or something.
But at least they let you quickly get your own affiliate link while browsing on their site. Flipkart requires me to use their backend or create a link manually.
Not sure if Cuelinks support Amazon already...

If you mean by buying from your own affiliate links, you can do that but you won't be paid comissions for buying through your own affiliate links.

This includes orders for customers, orders on behalf of customers, and orders for products to be used by you, your friends, your relatives, or your associates in any manner.[/color]

Amazon prefers you add all domains you handle though the approval is only for the first time. You can even enter your twitter feed. No idea though whether the links work outside the mentioned domains or not. I guess they do. Need someone to confirm.

I see Amazon affiliate links on Google+ all the time Asking for domains is useless unless they verify that you have control on the domains :)
