Okay...what was originally a question on reducing band width usage is now a discussion on some go button not appearing on FF. I hope the thread initiator has the patience to hold on till this erudite discussion finishes....

Some suggestions on saving bandwidth other than caching:

1. turn of all internet connected programs like windows live messenger, yahoo chat etc etc...they constantly suck up bandwidth due to the now heavy advertising material being refreshed continuously. While you are at it, remove any third party toolbars you have on your IE. Install windows defender which will show you internet connected processes at the same time protecting your pc from spyware.

2. Swith off windows update or only turn them on for critical updates periodically...try to get the critical updates, from a friend or free cds which usually contain these updates. you can also use other free connections you may have access to for these.

3. There are s/f available on the web which disable flash animation and pictures. You can try this freeware: Flash & Pics Control 2.0 - Flash and Pics Control is an Internet Explorer add-on that allows you to easily enable or disable flash animation and pictures.

4. Scan your pc regularly for adware/malware/spyware, as they also connect to the internet and increase traffic.

Some small things u can do which I hope will have some impact...

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions. probably you have seen the thread title and posted your comments. Noted ideas for use in IE.
See .POST 1. @cimmind using FIREFOX April 11th
Are there any tweaks/suggestions that you use for saving on download MBs
E.g.. making the Firefox cache 'read-only' or other such tweaks that you know of.I have the 500MB (combo) plan
Again Post No 17 response by thread starter april 11th .
Thanks essbebe. Those are two good extensions. I use both of them already .........
Please respond to query in post no 17 now on april 18th !.. Better late than never !
As I am a novice, could not suggest about cache etc in Firefox.

Try downloading between midnight and 4am.Traffic being low, cost is supposedly low during that time.If correct let others know too.

Your statement does not appear to be correct.
In dialup internet connection telephone charges are low ( BSNL 15 minutes 1 pulse )and Internet usage may be free depending on ISP.

Para two :
In Broadband depending on tariff plan selected you get free download between 1200AM-0600AM in MTNL. and 0200AM-0800AM in BSNL. Other wise there is no reduction for additional d/l beyond allowed quota @1MB. same rate H24 .

Reviving a thread that had hibernated, bcoz i think the question is still relevant. @leo: Thanks for pointing that out, leo. In fact, my patience DID get tested, and i didnt check the thread for long, as it had been hijacked for other discussions {the Mod being equally guilty in the hijacking! :-) } In brief: *I have a Triband Combo plan with 500MB limit *No, i dont have NU plan *I HAVE a broadband, not dial up *I am exceeding the limit every month, despite dwnloading only few software, no vidoes *My estimate is that MINIMUM abt 200MB of the downloads is wasteful/avoidable one, mainly on account of ad images etc that i dont need or want, especially in the sites that i regularly browse *Firefox Extensions used: Adblock Plus ; Flashblock {I dont use NoScript because of adverse comments on it} The main points i wanted discussed were: a) can a part of the cache be made read-only (having the regualr sites, say google, yahoo) b) can there be a way of blocking images over a specific size (say, 100kb), as the smaller ones usually include navigation buttons etc. The browsing gets crippled if i universally block images for the website. Please see this: Any tweaks/suggestions for saving download MBs? - Yahoo! Answers India Quote: "the problem is that it does not matter if your blocking at the browser level. the ISP has already sent you the data...whether you reject it or accept it, you are still billed for it." - Diabolic Preacher If this is true, then i am just ruining my browsing experience for nothing. Another related link: How to Save and Monitor Bandwidth when using Firefox | MakeUseOf.com (though the suggestions are not of much use there) Looking forward to a better discussion this time. And PLEASE start a new thread, if the point to be debated is smthing else! @essbebe: sorry for another long post, dude. I know long posts bug you. But i had to make myself clear, and i have provided references too. [Sorry for the lack of formatting, i dont know why its not working.]

Well, if u dont want images then why dont u use Opera..it has the option to block the images.and also its caching is good.I dont think any browser has any specific method by which it will show u only images below 100 Kb...These days most of the website have tons of images in them, which will consume a lot of ur valuble MB's..

/members/cimmind/Yahoo Answers statement is incorrect. You are lucky because in MTNL Upload is not counted. We ( BSNL/AIRTEL users ) lose about 10 to 20% on upload also. So you can post long messages here!!! .Just use FF with the addons ( NoScript also ) and check your D/L with shaplus 1.1.version.And nothing to beat DATAFOX to show current usage in the status bar of FF. .( provided MTNL usage portal is available to update). OPERA shows in the status bar the data being downloaded.Switch your Browser., if still using IE7 or IE8.Cross check with MTNL usage page. I do not see normally any advts/avatars/signatures in this forum pages. Para two: Try this test.1.Switch on computer and see the LAN properties status page after opening a website with all content. Pkts or bytes received will be shown. ( upload can be ignored by MTNL users )2. Reboot computer . Use the addons and see the same web page again with blocked content.. Does it show same data ? .3. Use IE ,Opera ( images blocked ) Firefox ( adblockplus/flashblock/ NoScript) repeat test for same web page. compare the data.Update 0640pm.12th may : para two : Tried in one web site with advts and pop ups.: Minefield ( FireFox) 115 packets d/l about33 % less compared to IE8 ( only pop ups blocked )186 packets.

Thanks for clarifying the mtnl mb count principle, essbebe. I also found the suggestions in this post quite useful: Saving download MBs in Firefox - MozillaZine Forums

@Motorazor: Yes, i agree with you Motorazor, there are no specific extensions to block images over a specific size (though that would have been cool).

I agree to the extensions recommended by essbebe (FF with AdblockPlus/Noscript/Flashblock) to which i can add another extension "ImgLikOpera" for FF. One extension that i dont recommend: "RemoveItPermanently" (RIP). It shows the images/text first for split second, only then they get blocked; that probably means the things have already come to your computer, so whats the use of setting block then.

Still, other suggestions that ppl found useful for saving on the downloads is welcome! :-)

{Incidentally, found the cause of loss of formatting in my last post. Noscript was to blame! I had to temporarily allow the javascript from broadbandforum for the formatting to be preserved in msg. Still its useful, i block javascript from adbrite, woopra and google-analytics, on this page}
