Apple MacBook Updates

Hey Sushubh,

Contrary to popular belief, Apple is NOT a rich man's toy. Show me a laptop out there with 250 GIG Harddrive, 2+ GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM Laptop which gets shipped for about 78,000 INR. Apple does.

Show me an Operating System(except linux), which is as stable, but easier to use than linux. Yeah, Apple is even more user-friendly than the windows. Example : To install a program like adobe acrobat reader, you just need to drag and drop the icon into your applications folder and VOILA! you're done. And to uninstall, just move it to the trash can.

GUI, Sushubh already knows I'm a GUI-whore, but apple's interface cannot be compared.

Now, lets answer your questions Sushubh Beta...
--------------------------------
//Leopard is scheduled to launch later this month and Apple might update their MacBook range with it.//

Apple WOULD update their apple Mac range with the leopard, but if you wanna buy the laptop now, the leopard costs $129 with everything thrown in. Its not like you have a business edition, corporate edition, basic edition, papa edition, mama edition, girl-friend edition like windows does. But its your call, but it might be another coupla months before apple MACs come out with the leopards.

//Second. Even if I get a Mac, i am not sure whether any of the wireless internet cards shipped by umm reliance, tata indicom, airtel are compatible with Mac OS X... Coz I remember seeing Windows only software/dialer to use them.//
Wireless is the option... I don't think you need a dialer when you subscribe to broadband... PPPOE should suffice, for that to work, you just need a web interface, and a modem(USB Hardware that they provide) should work with the laptop.

//Third: Any idea on whether Apple's warranty on Laptops sold in the US is globally valid?//
US Warranty is non-transferrable to India, and Apple don't have an Indian Warranty. They only have an International Travellers Warranty.

Regards,

Ashok

ah, another mac fanboy :Psushubh, check out the HP pavilion tablet pc model tx1201au or 1218au, its about Rs. 60-65k, good specs, decent price, "ultra portable" form factor, vista home premium :P im buying it soon.specs: amd turion64 x2 (dualcore 1.8ghz), 12.1 inch 1280x800 touchscreen, 1-2gb ram, 160gb HD, nvidia geforce g0 6150 "onboard" gfx (runs aero glass), dvd writer, fingerprint reader, webcam and stuff...

ya, the Dell inspiron 1720 is very neat and better performer than the HP tablet i guess, especially with its 17inch WUXGA screen (1920x1200) and discrete nvidia graphics. i like it except its a bigger "desktop replacement" form factor and im looking for an "ultra portable" form factor which the hp tablet is. i know amd cpus are not as good as (but close to) intel core2 duos right now but they keep the prices down :)

looks like the inspiron model i like does not have the pcmcia card slot.and all the network cards available in india are of that kind i think.any solution or i would have to end up using tata indicom plug2surf? :| :| :|anyone connects to the net using their tata indicom prepaid mobile phone using the data cable?

another reason to avoid Apple products is that they are of cheap build quality :Pthere are numerous blog/tech site posts about problems like cracks, scratches, performance, bugs etc and they keep cropping up for various products from their ipods to macbooks, although the people facing problems must be in the minority numbers, but still...ah, i see theres a slashdork article today about a bluetooth problem on the macbook :)

umm... i am pretty sure that the ratio of problems on macs would be comparable to ratio of problems on other companies. just because anything Apple make news... does not mean that they are more problematic.just show me any of the popular blogs which are totally devoted to toshiba/Panasonic/Sony/Dell hardware products?for apple? i can count several of them...tuaw,appleinsider,macrumors,thinksecret. does it mean apple makes way too many hardware products? i am sure dell has a broader range of products to blog on.

Hi,I just got a MacBook Pro from the US 3 weeks ago. Been a PC user all my life. The MacBook Pro is worth every Rupee spent. and now with Parallels you can run Win XP seamlessly on the Mac. My only requirement to run windoze is for Acad...Mac warranty covers the Laptop worldwide. The Applecare Protection plan (3yr extended warranty) covers the laptop but only in the place where you buy it. (At least this is what I have heard and read...ask your friend to check with Apple Store directly)I am using the Tata Indicom Data card on the macbook pro with a Express Card to PCMCIA convertor from Duel Adaptors. Works perfectly.I have also tried the USB modem of Reliance for the wireless connection and that works too.As far as waiting for the Leapord release and MacBook update... things keep updating and upgrading...so it's really your choice.... want a Mac NOW or can you wait??IMHO... go for the MAC... it is an experience you will not regret...hope this helped

Cool information!i would need that adaptor too coz inspiron lacks pcmcia slot.
