reports say it would launch in india this year. i have seen someone use it at a payment counter. i guess international Apple pay accounts do work in india already?

Yeah apparently NRIs were using Apple Pay tap to pay in India as well

Yes, they work if you have a non-Indian account added to Apple Pay. I have tested it.
