AT&T agrees in principle to buy Time Warner for $85 billion: sources

AT&T Inc (T.N) has reached an agreement in principle to buy Time Warner Inc (TWX.N) for about $85 billion, sources said on Friday, paving the way for the biggest deal in the world this year that would give the telecom company control of cable TV channels HBO and CNN, film studio Warner Bros and other coveted media assets.

The deal, which has been agreed on most terms and could be announced as early as Sunday, would be one of the largest in recent years in the sector as telecommunications companies look to combine content and distribution to capture customers replacing traditional pay-TV packages with more streamlined offerings and online delivery.

AT&T, which sells wireless phone and broadband services, has already made moves to turn itself into a media powerhouse, buying satellite TV provider DirecTV last year for $48.5 billion.

AT&T would own HBO with this deal!

The growing power of Netflix, Disney and Amazon and other larger media entities is forcing strange alliances on the industry. US telecom giant AT&T, which acquired Warner Media (then named Time Warner) for around $85 billion in 2018 is all set to fuse Warner Media with Discovery Inc, which itself is valued at around $16 billion with an enterprise valuation of $30 billion.
So AT&T following Verizon (which is selling off Yahoo), by eventually letting go Warner media
For us in India, lets hope HBO Max content becomes available on Discovery+ service, as HBO Max seems no plans to launch in India(?).

HBOMax arriving on Discovery+ in India seems very far fetched. lol. How would they advertise? The streaming service which you subscribed for shows about nature, food, animals and the world will also allow you to watch Zack Snyder's Justice League from now on?
