Well. We are only have two serious competitors now. So I believe there is room for 2-3 more. As I said if the Ubuntu & the like can make up the numbers (I am saying 5 as a reasonable number), then we probably dont need a BB10 (which is a decent OS by itself). Otherwise, leaving only 2 or 3 is not ideal.

I do not like either WP or BB because both of them are quite similar to iOS in nature (closed). I had rather have Ubuntu Touch or Firefox OS or Tizen to be the third major player in this segment of the market.

i hear closed thrown around a bit too much by fandroids.
I think being closed is not necessarily a bad thing. It all depends on what you want.
If you look at the requirements of majority of the smar phone users you will understand that do not understand what can be harmful for them and end up getting a malware infested smartphone.
Till you get a good set APIs that do not hinder innovation I do not think closed is bad.

Blackberry OS was fine because they did not have their own ecosystem of 'everything'. Windows Phone has that problem. When OS makers have their own ecosystem, they are bound to lock down their mobile platforms to prevent competing services from overtaking their own platform. Google is practically doing this to Apple on iOS despite the restrictions Apple has on iOS.
Blackberry is struggling big time largely because they stopped doing what they were good at. Instead they started replicating the iOS business model similar to Microsoft. Now Microsoft can handle a few years of losses on Windows Phone. Blackberry of course couldn't.

not a clue about what you meant.
i think it is time to go to bed will read this again in morning
cao!!

Closed or otherwise, I am just in favour of more options.
BB10 has the potential, and they have a head start in terms of apps as compared to other newer OS. But thats about it.
Finally, it comes to marketing as well. Nokia is the only company that is eagerly marketing WP8 devices. Samsung/HTC also have some Win8 devices, but that seems to only to make up the portfolio & clearly they focus is on their Android offerings. So, if these companies do the same with BB10, then there is no point. Similarly if anyone wants to do a HP (with WebOS), then there is no point as well...

Microsoft fucked up Windows Phone 8 by signing a special deal with Nokia. Nokia further fractured Windows Phone by launching Lumia exclusive apps and services. This week they released a special update for their Lumia devices which brings tons of exclusive new features to their own devices. Why would Samsung or LG focus on WP8 when they do not get the goodies!
Google on the other hand has played very safe with Motorola acquisition.

Again, it is apps that make or break an OS.
Yes BB had a head start with number of apps when compared to the other OSes (except iOS and Android) but still there were people who did not buy a blackberry for lack of apps.
Lower sales imply developers were simply not interested to port there apps to the platform and a vicious circle was entered.
Yes competition will be good in the segment but unless Apple and/or Google do any thing really stupid it will be really difficult for newer OSes to compete

Another thing we are forgetting is that BB10 is able to support some Android OS apps... And from what I see, they have improved support over time, with JellyBean expected shortly??????? , I feel BB10 OS should have not have that problem..
