Hi Guys,I have few questions about internet broadband in Gujarat. I am going to India in from canada in a week or so. I am taking my laptop with me. i am going to stay there for about a year so i would like to know wat kind of inter service i shud get and from which company i shud get.I have a freind who told me to get service from BSNL for 750 rps and the modem wud cost me 1800 rps..is this a good deal?is there any other better plans there?wat is the speed there in india for basic internet service? is there any limit how much i have to use a month or its unlimite?can i take my modem from here canada...will that work in india?can sum1 plz answer me not all but some...Thank you very much

stick to bsnl or airtel. the best speeds you can get at a decent price is probably 1 mbps at around 2500 from airtel. pure unlimited. your modem might work provided it is a adsl/dsl modem and not the dial up one :D

wow 2500? so wat do i get in 750 plan with bsnl?
yeh the modem i have is dsl...its unlock as well.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

here are the tariff plans!

the 750 plan offers 256kbps unlimited.

i was assuming that you would need a faster plan :)

bsnl has 512kbps unlimited plan for rs. 1350.

airtel's plan is rs. 1499 + taxes.

damn..that is so complicated..how do u guys understand this?
Thanx Sushubh for ur quick reply..i really appreciate it.
so im looking aorund 2000 for a month just for the internet?lol
and i thought it was expensive here in canada...lol
i pay around 2000 rps for home phone, interent and the cable tv..
and the interent speed is about 5mbps...and no bandwidth.

well that would depend upon how fast you need the net to be. if you can work with a 256kbps line, you would be spending less than 1000 bucks. bsnl could be a toughie to deal with. they seems to be always in short of modems and other required hardware. the fastest and safest bet is airtel. slightly more expensive but fast and efficient. and yeah, india is expensive when it comes to internet connectivity. dont start me on the cable thingy. if you find a decent cable tv service provider, you are in luck...DTH packages here are so freaking complicated, internet would sound like fun.

Thanx Buddy for quick replies...i guess i shud just wait untill i come back to india...my mum is already in India and she just got dish tv installed last week..we dont even have a phone line at home yet..so its gonna be starting from scratch for us...anyways buddy its time for me to go home from wrk..by the way where r u in india if u dont mind me asking? Im in canada Toronto.Thanx have a good night or shud i say have a good day!:)

AKA..... Jaggery Village...:cool2:

gurgaon. its near delhi. they call it the call center city of india. :)

i think there are two versions...

gur gaon = jaggery villate
guru gaon = village of the teacher

i think the legend is that drona jee (the real one not abhishek bachchan) taught pandavas and kauravas shitz here.

The origin of the city's name is steeped in Hindu mythology. Legend has it that Gurgaon is the ancestral village of Guru Dronacharya, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. In Sanskrit, Guru means teacher, which in this case refers to Dronacharya and Gram means village. According to Hindu mythology, the village was gifted by the Pandavas and Kauravas to Dronacharya, and was therefore known as guru-gram. The gram was over a period of time rounded off to a colloquial gaon (which also means village in Prakrit) and hence the name Gurgaon emerged. According to another theory, the word Gurgaon is an amalgamation of the words 'gur' (a kind of Jaggery) and 'gaon'(village).
