It by all probability should not be a dns issue as
--> you are able to ping google.com from command prompt, he is able to ping websites. This means the google.com is resolving to its ip address.

-- >Now when you say you have tried telnet.. Did you try just telnet google.com or else did you try telnet google.com 80. If you tried the latter and got a blank screen that means its connecting to the web server fine. Then the issue should be restricted to software.. But that chance is less as you say it worked via usb modem.

-- > Please check the security and parental control settings in the Nokia Siemens modem. You can access the advanced setup page by http://192.168.1.1/main.html
In this go to Advanced Setup > MAC Filtering -- Remove anything thats there
Now go to Advanced Setup > Parental Control -- Remove anything thats there.

-- > Another last resort you can try is to uninstall both your network adapters from Device Manager and Reinstall it after a reboot.

Let me know what happens anyways.

From Google search:
is generally recommended that if you have a website that is unreachable, you should use both the traceroute and ping commands before you contact your ISP to complain. More often that not, there will be nothing to your ISP or hosting company can do about it.

HI Guys,Thanks for the responses. I have tried with Open DNS in both router and PC + Laptop but no change. Laptop still works but PC cannot browse. When I repair the PC Lan card picks up the IP adressess just fine and does not give any error msg. Same with laptop. Only difference is after repair Laptop can browse whereas PC cannot.(LAN card is enabled in both cases)I tried to telnet both, default 23 and 80 but it just connects and does not give me a login prompt. Same with ftp from PC . Both telnet and ftp work fine from Laptop. There is no Advenced menu for DSL in the router. Only for wireless. MAC filter is disabled. There is no option for Parental Control either. When I login to the router via telnet form laptop, following is the menu options I get:- Main Menu1. ADSL Link State2. LAN3. WAN4. DNS Server5. Route Setup6. NAT7. Firewall8. Quality Of Service9. Management10. Passwords11. Diag12. Reset to Default13. Save and Reboot14. Exit ->Thanks in advance once again.Shakti

If you are on Dialer "Bridged" Wanminiport mode
Advanced options will be different.
Try PPP/PPPoE always on connection.

Hi All,Have found a work around to this issue. I connected a USB LAN Card to the PC and it is now able to browse the internet. I think the problem is with my on board lan port. As the PC is under waranty I will contact Compaq and lodge a complaint and try and get it replaced. Thank you all for all your time and effort but it looks like it is a bad on board Lan chip.Shakti.
