Check your SNR and attenuation values. Is there any difference ? If not, insist on replacing cable. Check the cable. Check if there are so many joint or no insulation area and all. You can also try a complaint to Nodal officer or Appellate authority. ID and phone no on the backside of your bill.

Are these normal :

down up
SNR 33.6 16.9
attenuation 9.0 3.4

Haven't filed a complaint yet. But planning to do so next week.

Check yourselves

Thanks. Looks like my line quality is just fine. Probably it is the ppp server problem. Anyway, I'll file a complaint

Update:So, Now my values are as followingDownstream Data Rate 353 Kbps Upstream Data Rate 101 Kbps Downstream Attainable Data Rate 359 Kbps Upstream Attainable Data Rate 94 Kbps SNR (Downstream) 8.80 dB SNR (Upstream) 8.0 dB Line Attentuation(Downstream) 29.5 dB Line Attentuation(Upstream) 35.0 dBWhich seems very poor. I have filed complained around 5-6 times now, no one comes to see the problem at my home. I tried calling nodal officer like 10-15 times during different times, but hell. No one picks up the phone.I'm totally screwed. What should i do ?And now instead of frequent disconnections, the dsl line keeps on blinkin the whole day and i am only able to access internet for about hour a day.. rest its dead.

Check your SNR and attenuation values.

For months I've been plagued by frequent disconnection (every 15 - 30 mins or so). Lately it had become virtually unusable (disconnecting every couple of minutes). After a lot of calling, the lineman came and I had him replace a length of multi jointed cable. Now the connection is stable, more or less (only one disconnection in 4 hours). But the SNR and attenuation values are pretty much the same as before the fix! They are quite poor :
Local SNR about 9 dB, Local attenuation: 38 dB
Remote SNR: 19 dB, Remote attenuation: 24.5 dB

What's the meaning of "Local" and "Remote" values (I'm clicking the "Broadband Line" under "Status" (Siemens C2110), is it correct?)?

Should I worry about SNR and attenuation values if I don't have disconnections any more? The connection is pretty slow, though, as it always has been (home 250, I usually get not more than 70 kBps download speed at best, usually much slower, like 40 or less). BSNL says I can't expect a fast line, since my home is some 4 km from their distribution centre. Thanks.

Thats same for me, after complaint. Downstream data rate went down, SNR values are still low.Internet became very slow..but again, my disconnections and DSL line being down still remains. My place is around 2km away from main bsnl telephone exchange.

Local is for download and remote is for upload. No need to bother if you are not facing any problem. But SNR and attenuation values represent the line condition which may be worse in your case. Try talking to the Senior Divisional Engineer, he will understand it.
