I want to hear from people who run their own servers at home using BSNL FTTH. I'm talking about running stuff like Jellyfin, Immich, and the *arr apps.

Some specific things I want to know:

  • Do you get a static IP or are you stuck behind CG-NAT?
  • How reliable is the upload speed?
  • Does BSNL block or slow down torrents?
  • How censored is your internet?
  • Does it offer IPv6?
My situation: I'm in a smaller town using a local ISP. I pay 850Rs monthly for 75Mbps up/down. Ping is pretty good - 11ms in speedtest and 14ms to the nearest Cloudflare datacenter (Hyderabad). The service is mostly stable except for a few slow days. My biggest advantage with the local ISP is customer service. Whenever I have an issue, I simply call them and they solve it very quickly. They're very open and friendly about solving problems. The internet is also very open with minimal censorship.

I run several services at home but I'm behind CG-NAT, so no port forwarding. I didn't ask about static IP since the ISP guy probably wouldn't know about it. There is also no IPv6 which could have made it somewhat better. To get around this, I use:

  • Tailscale + VPS with reverse proxy to reach my services from outside
  • Tailscale for private stuff like Immich
  • Reverse proxy with a domain for things like Jellyfin
How is your ping? How is your experience dealing with service, like in cases when the internet is down? This is my biggest fear with BSNL. I know it varies by area but I simply want to know, and I've heard positive experiences in my area.

In my case, Tailscale mostly uses relay connections when accessing from outside, which makes everything slow.

Would love to hear how BSNL works for you if you're hosting services at home, as I am planning to switch to it since it's cheaper and offers faster internet.

As someone who switched from BSNL to airtel (and regretting the decision somewhat)

Lemme tell you, your overall experience will vary based on your local factors, ie. How responsible and responsive ur local BSNL officials and LCO is.

There's no CGNAT, you get public dynamic IP.
Your ONT is the limit, open whatever ports u want.

Use bridge mode and do whatever you like.

You get 20 to 30 Mbps extra speeds on ur plans. Haven't noticed any torrent throttling ever in BSNL.

Ipv6 is a hit and a miss.
Censorship, the usual level not heavy like Jio or airtel. NTP doesn't work on ipv4 tho, so mind that.

For homelab purposes it's very good.
