can ddr ram be used along with ddr2 chip?

well i got this old p4 with 512MB ram DDR! (399MHz Hynix .. i think!)i want to add another 1gb ram chip in it...... can i use a ddr2 ram chip?? wud be gr8 if i cud :yahoo:can any1 tell me if its possible?? :ashamed:

No ,You can't use DDR2 ram with DDR compatible motherboards .

and even if you were able to i am sure the speeds of the new ram chips would be throttled... i think. motherboards need to be capable of handling the new chips as well. just remove the older chip and add the new 1 gig one.

it depends on Motherboard - check the manual available online for that. As u said, its a old one - then it won't support the DDR2. also, if two different frequency ram chips are placed, the motherboard/machine pics the slowest chip - i mean that if u put 333 and 400 MHz chip of 512 MB each - u'll get 1 GB @ 333 MHz...

btw my mobo is MSI MS-7104 n yeah it doesnt support ddr2 chips :wall:
oh well.... it supports a max of 2GB ddr memory...

So buy a Memory Chip which supports DDR motherboard .Since my motherboard also doesn't support so I had to buy 400Mhz DDR Kingston Ram .

Same here, I have 4 year old Athlon XP and some Asus mobo.I was not aware of diff between DDR and DDR2, leter found out that DDR and DDR2 have different pin layouts. So DDR2 RAM simply will not work on DDR socket even from hardware point of view
