I have a old BSNL teracom AN-5006-04-A GPON router which is preconfigured in a transparent bridge mode. This router does not have a gigabit port whereas my plan has been upgraded to 200Mbps. The local BSNL office does not have any GE port router . I am planning to buy my own router with a GE port but I am not sure if the vlan id will be available from BSNL side I obviously have the ppoe password and login. Is it possible to configure a new router without the vlan id ? Is the Vlan id necessary if the router is placed in bridged mode ? Any other data I need to get the Internet side working on my own ,? I can do without the voice (VOIP) function. Thanks

Thanks. is it possible to get VLAN id from the AN-5006-04 router ? and anything else besides the vlan id and pppoe password and login needed to configure the internet over ftth ?

you say that AN-5006 is configured in transparent bridge mode, which means that pppoe connection is being dialled from another router. do you have access to the admin page of that router?
Also do you own this AN 5006 or is it on rent from bsnl?

Yes the pppoe is being dialled from my Asus wifi router which also acts as the dhcp server but it does not have any vlan id field . The AN5006 is on rent from bsnl and the asus router is mine and I have full access to the admin page I have changed my wifi router 2-3 times in the last 6 years since I have had this ftth but the an5006 is the original one . bsnl says they can swap the an5006 for another an5006 but they do not have anything with a ge port.

that means vlan id must be on an5006 and getting it from there may be an option but if you are thinking of replacing an5006 with your own onu then you will surely need intervention from bsnl side because -
1- you will have to ask them what company onus are compatible with their olt.
2- as soon as you return the onu to bsnl, they will decommission its serial number from backend and you will have to get your device's serial number registered with them.
while at it , why not ask them the vlan if as well, no point in going through the effort of taking it from the current an5006.

The problem here is that no one has apparently deployed there own onu , all the onu's are on rent from bsnl and they think that self owned onu's will cause a loss of revenue to bsnl in term of rentals ! so they seem to be actively discouraging the purchase of own onu's at the same time they are not upgrading there onu's to one's having GE ports . Anyway regarding the onu compatibility with olt issue is there anything else to look at besides the difference between GPON and EPON ?

Yes, i am not an expert at this but some olts are locked to work only with onus from the same manufacturer. i had a Huawei onu from rent and i replaced it with another huawei one just to be sure of compatibility. Is your connection through LCO or directly from bsnl because most lcos sell their own Syrotech onus with ge port.

It is from BSNL directly and it seems this is a 10 year old router built by , of-course, a Chinese company known as fiberhome and sold to BSNL by a company called teracom both of these companies are now defunct and bsnl should have replaced them years ago with more modern modems with GE ports but neither are they upgrading their equipment nor allowing the subscriber to upgrade on their own .

then , I believe you are out of options here. you can only complain, first a written one to the exchange explaining your issue, try complaining to bsnl corporate on twitter. If all else fails try pgportal as a last resort. You can also try casually asking them to downgrade your plan to 100mbps saying that since your device only supports 100 there is no use paying extra for 200. that may drive them to work something out for you.
