Former Maharashtra Minister Chhagan Bhujbal's Premises Searched by State's Anti-Corruption Bureau
Former Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal's homes and offices were searched on Tuesday by the state's anti-corruption bureau. 16 properties belonging to Mr Bhujbal and his family members - including a bungalow with a helipad and 65 acres of land - were searched in various locations across Mumbai, Thane, Nasik and Pune.

Mr Bhujbal is being investigated for alleged corruption in contracts worth Rs. 100 crore awarded for a Maharashtra Sadan or state government guest house in Delhi. He was the minister for Public Works Department in the NCP-Congress government in Maharashtra at the time.

everal officers in PWD turned rich overnight and began flaunting their wealth. "PWD is the one of the most corrupt department in the state," said senior government official.

A few years ago, an ACB raid on properties of Satish Chikhlikar, chief engineer of Nashik division, had seen recovery of cash and jewellery worth Rs 8.70 crore. Similarly, Anil Gaikwad, a chief engineer from Thane, saw an unprecedented rise in his wealth. Apparently Gaikwad, also an accused in the Sadan scam, was known as the collection man.

"Gaikwad had properties worth not less than Rs2,000 crore. He used to commute to Mantralaya in an Audi. He owned 17 cars and several houses and had started various firms in his family members' names. Interestingly, his brother Sunil Gaikwad recently got elected as an MP on a BJP ticket," said a source.

Another Bhujbal man was Dhule resident Sandeep Bedse, who fought the last state polls on an NCP ticket and spent nearly Rs30 crore. Bedse was an officer on special duty for Bhujbal. "When Bedse was about to resign, he collected nearly Rs 10 crore from various PWD engineers promising them plum postings. Currently, he is the district president of NCP," said a source.

The raids revealed that Sukhada Apartments at Sir Pochkhanwala Road in Worli, right opposite the ACB’s headquarters, is just one among the many sprawling properties the NCP leader and his family own.

The ACB raids also found that Bhujbal owns a 65-acre property in Lonavala with a six-bedroom bungalow embellished with imported furniture, decorated with antique statues, and equipped with a swimming pool and a helipad.

ACB officials also raided a plush bungalow worth Rs 100 crore in Nashik, called Bhujbal Farm. Measuring 46,500 square feet, it has 25 rooms, a swimming pool and a gymnasium. “We are preparing a list of all the properties and assets,” said a high-ranking ACB officer.
