Last Tuesday, the government deployed a draconian law to charge four Tamil Nadu NGOs for opposing a nuclear power plant in the southern state. The government alleges that they violated the Foreign Contributions Regulations Act, which regulates foreigners paying for domestic political causes. New Delhi has also written to the state government to probe 12 more organizations for misusing foreign funds. The original version of FCRA was passed in 1976 when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties, and this law still serves as a handy stick to suppress criticism.
