Connecting 2 PCs through a Switch, not directly

I have a switch and lan wire and rj45 connectors. I want to interconnect 2PCs thru switch. And share broadband also, if possible(w/o using USB port for DSL modem). Any idea how do i do that?

I think: DSL lan wire going to switch instead of my PC's lan card. Then 2 lan wires going to 2 PCs. Will that work? If yes, which wires should be crossover and which straight?

umm here... the wire from the modem goes into the switch. multiple machines connect to that switch... they form a local network and they can also share the internet.

eh? how does the modem support multiple PCs connecting to it thru a switch??? does it give out multiple IPs based on the MAC addresses? if so then cool...

umm airtel 220bx is actually a router too... i can connect it directly to my machine or through a switch. both works fine. and multiple machines are able to access the web through the same connection.

^^I heard a SWITCH cannot separate internet packets, i'll need a ROUTER. So if a wire goes to switch then 2 wires from switch to 2PCs, then, i think although PCs' data can be shared but not internet. Any idea about that?

ya your modem needs to be able to do router stuff, for example my bsnl mt800 has dhcp but i dont know if it just handles a single link or might support multiple pcs sending it packets....

1)my modem is 220BXI, Sushubh said its also a router. If its a router, connecting it to a switch, instead of router wud do?2)There will be 3lan wires reqd. 1 from switch to my 1st PC. 2 from switch to my 2nd PC. 3 from modem to switch. Right? Now which of these shall be crossover & which straight?

if its the switch all are connecting to then all should be straight, no need for crossovers...

Yes that will work. dsl---> Switch ==>Pc1 & pc2U may need to tweak ur nat/map settings or if u didnt change it, it should work out of the box with dhcp.-- single rj45== 2 rj45.dont bother about crossover/straiht cables etc. Generally newer switches figure out themselves.
