Cops in India are now tracking torrent downloads to catch pirates

At the risk being sounding a Warthog... How trustworthy are these VPN servers themselves...
 
I would not necessarily trust us based VPN servers because they are required by law to keep track of usage by their users. this is why i stopped using Hide My Ass.

iPredator on the other hand is operated by The Pirate Bay from what I can see from Wikipedia: Ipredator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia They are based in Sweden where privacy laws are much strong.

We need to keep connection logs for debugging purposes, which happens encrypted and off-site. Connection logs contain information for debugging PPTP client issues, e.g. connection drops, firewall issues. They also show if you are trying to log in with a wrong password.

There are no traffic logs, we do not look into your traffic.

as for how safe they are? they are probably safer than not using them and letting your ISP record all your online activities.
 
PrivateVPN also seems to be based in Sweden though they have servers across Europe. I see their privacy policies are similar to iPredator. So both are cool.
 
VPN adds annoying lag to regular browser. torrents? they fluctuate but i have managed to get pretty close to regular speeds on popular torrents.

speed is usually not the problem. lag at first connection is.

youtube etc. might not run as smoothly. but after a while you get used to the minor lag and enjoy the privacy :D

I am thinking of a VPN, just for peace of mind. Seems the whole web is spying now a days!I guess when u use vpn, that will be limited to the specific machine right?So in the case of WiFi router and accessing 3-4 devices how does it work?
 
most routers have a section dedicated to VPN. you can set it up on your router and all devices uses that channel. here is mine.

one thing though. it would suck if you are trying to access india specific services like your paypal or banking accounts.

flipkart might not let you purchase mp3 files etc. so it's better to connect to it manually.
 
Based on my tests, youtube has problems only during day time. It's smooth during night apart from the initial lag. I setup & used VPN from my Linode VPS which allows speeds greater than 10mbps consistently. The only explanation could be Airtel not treating VPN same level as Http. @ chromaniac, Do you see youtube hiccups in night as well when playing 720p?
 
i do not watch a lot of youtube. and i only tend to turn on VPN when i am running torrents.also. considering Linode is based in america, it is not really a good idea to use them for vpn in case privacy is more important.
