Delhi HC asks Facebook and Google to suggest safety measures to protect minors

The Delhi High Court has asked Facebook and Google to file suggestions on how minors can be protected online in India within the next four weeks, reports PTI, adding that the court has scheduled the next case hearing on July 16, 2013. This directive follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the former RSS leader K.N. Govindacharya, which stated that social networking sites allowing children below 18 years of age is in violation of the Indian Majority Act, the Indian Contract Act and also the Information and Technology Act, after which the Delhi High Court had asked the central government to explain why individuals below 18 years of age were being allowed to register on social networking sites. The petition had also sought verification of all existing and new members of the social networking site and had pointed towards the Know Your Customer norms applicable to telecom companies.

Verification of all existing and new members? They fu****g kidding me? Imagine if Facebook sends me a mail asking me to mail them scanned copy of my Pan Card or Voter's ID. Nightmare.

Its time to seriously think about moving to some other nation. Indian govt has been smoking some weird stuff especially more so in past 2 years or so. Don't know how long before we will become worse than China or even Iraq/Iran.

heh. i mean i get it. you are trying to show good intentions. that is save kids from the online predators. but seriously... when our newspapers and television channels broadcast shit 24x7. internet has enough adult material freely available that can last you thousands of lifetimes... what are you going to achieve by stopping kids from joining social networks in the first place?
BTW. Google and Facebook are both known to ask for a government ID in case they believe that your account is an impersonation of someone else or you are running a fake profile.

well. the point is that. the government also gains from this move. they have been trying hard to get control on the popular social networks online after the fiasco with IAC. so they are not going to oppose it. the opposition is just helping the general cause of the politicians in the parliament.
of course, it now depends upon our courts if they are going to fall for the trap and further dilute our fundamental rights of privacy.
errm. i do not even remember if we have a fundamental right of privacy

This is understandable since its only in exceptional cases

Courts are running India. 2G case is being pushed by the courts. So many more because Courts do a better job, ending up doing Govt's work.
