see dishtv's responce below on Tata Sky price cut which says it seems to be price cut on tata sky end but actually it is price hike by tata sky by removing important channels from base pack and putting them under different packages, which in result force customer to pay more for the same set of channels which they are getting at low cost earlier.

Direct-to-Home television service providers Dish TV and Tata Sky are locked in a war of words over the latest subscription offer by the latter.

A day after Tata Sky announced cut in its subscription charges on different packages, Dish TV today said "what is being positioned seemingly as a price reduction is not at all a reduction".

"A reduction of price can happen only if the value of the product does not decrease simultaneously, which is not the case here. Whilst a new lower price has been announced, it is at the cost of reduced content (as) 12 channels have been removed from the base pack," a Dish TV statement said.

Tata Sky had announced that its Family Pack would be available at Rs 200 per month instead of Rs 250 earlier. This pack offers around 90 leading Hindi, regional, kids, infotainment and news channels. Also, the top-end Super Saver pack, offering over 110 channels including English channels, was reduced to Rs 260 per month.
Dish TV said in actual terms it is a price increase by Tata Sky as now customers would have to pay extra for ESPN, Star Sports, Star Cricket, Ten Sports and BBC, which have not been included in the new packages. These channels were available within the earlier schemes.

When contacted, Tata Sky Chief Marketing Officer Vikram Mehra said the new pricing strategy was done to avoid customers paying for unwanted channels. "The whole philosophy is that people who do not want to pay for a niche channel should not be paying for something they do not want to watch," Mehra said.

Let's take an example of super saver pack,
They have reduced price by Rs. 40, from Rs.300 to Rs. 260 but now if we include those channels which they removed from this pack and made available on add-on packs then total cost is Rs.260+ Rs.40 (sports platinum) +Rs.15 (ten sports) + Rs.30 (BBC channels) == Rs.345.

so Infact its a hike of Rs.45.

.
They should have made this for all channels ! and base back even less 50-75 RS for 30-50 FTA channels.. + pay channel we like !! so we get our fav channels for 200 -250 !

exactly ... Just sue TS and teach them a lesson ... also give big ads in newspaper explaining how TS is fooling ppl ... It will hit TS right where they don't want :D

Taking his argument further, why cant they do something like this-
1. have some fixed monthly charge to account for subscription, operating cost etc.
2. let people view FTA channels without any extra charge
3. Bill customers for pay channels based on actual viewing
(just like phone, internet services)

I don't know if that would be practical (especially for satellite DTH), but it would be great in my opinion... and very much fair:p

Why would Dish TV want to sue Tata Sky when they are shooting themselves in the foot and driving away customers by introducing these new costly packages?ESPN Star Sports is already giving ads in the papers showing that it is a price hike not a price cut.All Dish TV has to do is to watch the drama unfold as Tata Sky self-destructs.:hysterical:

Like in CAS we should be allowed to individually select channels apart from bouquet. I do not understand why the channel which is offered for 5 Rs. +St in CAS is offered in non CAS and DTH for much higher price. Does it mean than the value (contents) of channel has gone up for DTH or non CAS

price hardly matter here, when we spend hundreds of rupees for eating out, in my opinion 40-50 rupees doesnt matter to those who can afford Tata Sky or dish tv or big tv.
