Kind attention all the Members

Most of the members in this forum want DTH prices to comedown, want new & other missing channels and selection of pay channels on individual basis. That can be achieved only by the Government Regulation. Here the Govt Regulatory is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. It has recently issued a consultation paper on DTH pricing.

It has asked the public and interested persons to give consultation based on which it will formulate policy that will regulate the DTH pricing.

Persons desiring Govt regulation for DTH pricing give your suggestions.

A set of questions on consultation and answers were in the following thread. It was also asked there, whether CAS regualtion of Rs.5.30 per channel should be made applicale for DTH also ?.The thread is a bit big due to no. of questions made by the TRAI. So please devote 5 minutes of your time read the questions and answers, if you find the answers good simply copy the same and email it to the e-mail id mentioned at the end of that thread. Make any changes if you desire otherwiese. Anyway please make your suggestions. The last date for sending e-mails is 30.3.2009.

I also request members kindly give you opinion on the answers given in the thread in that thread itself and any changes which are required to be made.

I am posting this thread in Tata Sky section because this is the most active participating section.

I think all of us do. But we must remember that all these companies are facing huge losses plus the recession. It is double whammy for them. I don't think they are making any profits so prices cannot go down atleast for now.

The prices offered by all operators are almost same if anybody selects particular set of channels. The only problem with Tata Sky is they are bundling many channels. If they seperate out channel packages based on interests of people (like GEC's, News, Sports, etc) and provide these as packs it would reduce cost for 'normal' users. 'Others' (intrested in many channels) can go for MEGA like packs. I think DISH TV, BIG TV, DIGITAL TV has got packages right to some extent.

It is like cross subsidy. What is the cost of mega-pack like package in other DTHs. I think other DTHs are giving subsidy to low-end packages at the cost of high-end packs.Bundled package is cheaper than sum of its components. That may be the reason for cheaper high-end packages in TS.

DTH operators can get profit only when they get a minimum no. of subscribers. Dish has got that and it is going to start making profits. See the link below

DTH is now promoted as available for ordinary persons. Everything like TVs, Electricity, Fans, Fridge etc., where started as available for rich persons and now is there anyhouse which does not have that. Everybody can earn profit only when it is made for ordinary persons. In that case only due to many no. of takers the price will be decreased and it will be viceversa also i.e to get more no. of subscibers price will be decreased.

I absolutely agree. I don't understand the logic of starting this thread. DTH operators don't run their business on our wants and needs. They knows very well how to handle their business and also how to maintain the package prices in this competitive sector which awaits several other companies to launch their service soon. The current price strategy is still very ok and it is very competitive too. Also if u can compromise over quality, the better option is cable tv not dth.
