Hover is what I recommend if you want a straightforward service. Prices are on the higher side. USD 15 for most domain types but privacy is included. Affiliate Link Hover does not sell hosting or other services so the things are super simple to manage.
GoDaddy if you are looking for bulk purchases coz discounts really work out well. Affiliate Link The problem is that the backend is a complicated mess and they push tons of other services even if you are trying to buy one simple domain. Gets annoying real quick.
Name.com and NameCheap.com are two other services that are very highly recommended online but I have not used them personally.
I would suggest staying away from Indian resellers for domain purchases.
 
Have been using Namecheap and Internet.bs for a few years, touchwood. Internet.bs comes with free privacy protection (sort of like Whoisguard) while Namecheap has coupons floating in the internet that would give you the same benefit (although at renewal, it rarely works out).
 
gandi.net from what I understand charges a premium considering it is a European company. If you do need privacy option, Hover should work fine for you. Just a FYI. Not all domains allow privacy. .in domains for example block private WhoIS information.
 
You mean .in domains will make the details of the owner of the domain public?
 

Not allowed to use privacy on these domains. Using fake information is of course possible but against ICANN rules. Your domain can be taken away from you.
 
GoDaddy is really good for domains I renewed 9 domains in single shot with 30% discount and 5 more @ Rs.141 each. Other services by them sucks way beyond imagination.
 
For dotcom I would use Cloudflare. There are not many deals around. You might find a registrar that might have a discount on transfers.
