DTH cos may get partial content exclusivity

NEW DELHI: Direct-to-home (DTH) players may finally be allowed partial exclusivity of content. Globally, DTH has grown on the back of content exclusivity. This is specially true of the US. Partial content exclusivity means that DTH players would be allowed to carry niche channels exclusively for a premium.

DTH players have been pushing for exclusivity of content as several new players are emerging in the DTH space. So far there were just two players — Essel promoted by Zee which offers DTH services under the brand DishTV and the joint venture between Tata and Star India, Tata Sky.

But now, Sun TV has entered DTH services in south. Telecom players Bharti and Reliance Communications are expected to launch their services soon. While Bharti has said it will launch its DTH services by the first quarter of next year, Reliance Communications may launch its services by the year end. Since competition is intensifying, content exclusivity is the only option left to bring in new customers.

Additionally, pure play telecom players are gearing up to bundle internet, telecom and entertainment as one feed which could emerge as a threat for core DTH companies. Says Tata Sky managing director Vikram Kaushik: "We have submitted our proposals to TRAI that DTH players should be allowed to have exclusive content. We have been assured that the matter would be evaluated."

Industry sources believe TRAI may allow content exclusivity once competition increases and other players start operating in the space. Bharti Airtel in its reply to the regulator’s consultation paper has also supported exclusivity of content for lack of transponders.
