Essel Group-promoted DTH service provider Dish TV has registered a 25-30 per cent increase in sales of its mobile DTH units due to the upcoming elections, as a number of politicians have installed these units in their vehicles to get the latest news update anytime.
Dish TV is the only DTH operator in the country, which offers mobile DTH units, where subscribers can watch digital television in their vehicles. The unit comes in two models with a price tag of Rs 79,000 and Rs 1,49,000 and can be fitted on a car, bus or any sports utility vehicle. A mobile DTH unit comes in with a special built-in roving antenna that can receive DTH signals even when the vehicle is on the move. Since its soft launch a few months ago, the company has installed mobile units in more than 500 moving vehicles, Dish TV’s chief operating officer Salil Kapoor told Financial Chronicle. The pressing need for politicians to stay connected and updated through satellite television — even while on the move — is driving the sales of Dish TV’s mobile DTH units, especially with the upcoming general elections, he said.
The politicians who have already bought the product from Dish TV includes Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati, J B Panda, Narendra Modi, YSR Reddy, Chandra Babu Naidu, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, Narayan Rane, Lalu Prasad (in his personal railway bogey) and Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
“Actors such as Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Mammootty have also bought this product,” he added. It has also fitted these units on board 15 aircrafts of Kingfisher and on the special trains of high-ranking railway officials. However, the company did not reveal the revenues earned from this product.
This service is for all those who need to stay connected with the world -— they could be people with interest in stock markets, sports, politicians, celebrities and businessmen, Kapoor said. “Demand and enquiries for our mobile DTH units have been overwhelming from states such as Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, among others. We are pushing our mobile DTH units very aggressively,” he added.
